MUZAFFARABAD: The Election Commission of Azad Jammu and Kashmir has finalised all arrangements to conduct the General Elections-2016 on 41 direct seats of the AJK Legislative Assembly on Thursday (today) in a free, fair and transparent manner.
Around 427 candidates are contesting the elections. Voting will start at 8am and continue until 5pm with the assistance of 23,394 polling staff — 4,462 presiding officers, 6,310 polling officers and 12,622 polling assistants — without a break. However, voters present on the premises of polling stations would be allowed to cast their vote after 5pm.
According to the final list issued by the commission, 328 candidates are contesting the election in 29 constituencies in 10 districts in AJK and 99 are in the run in 12 constituencies of Kashmiri refugees spread over four provinces
of Pakistan.
A total of 2,674,586 people, 1,483,747 men and 1,190,839 women, will cast their votes in Thursday’s election. The election commission has set up 8,048 polling booths at 5,429 polling stations in all constituencies in AJK and Pakistan. Polling material has already been transported to polling stations under the supervision of army personnel.
Special security arrangements have been made for the election. About 36,000 personnel of the Pakistan Army, Rangers, Frontier Constabulary and police have been deployed in 29 constituencies in AJK and 12 constituencies in Pakistan to maintain law and order on the election day.
